Instructions to Traveling to Tianjin

Visas

Foreigner: Foreigners to Tianjin may apply for visas to the foreign diplomatic organizations, consul or other foreign ministry authorized offices. As for those who take part in the group traveling to Tianjin, all procedures may be settled by the traveling agencies for convenience.
The visas are classified into nine categories according to the different affairs as follows: (L)-letter traveling visa, (F)-letter visiting visa, (G)-letter transient visa, (C)-letter steward visa, (D)-letter residential visa, (Z)-letter professional visa, (X)-letter studying visa, (J-1)-letter permanent journalist visa, (J-2)-letter temporary visa for journalists in China.
Taiwan Compatriot: Taiwan compatriots who visit relatives or traveling to Tianjin via other countries may apply to the Hong Kong or Macao office of People’s Republic of China or entrust the China Traveling agency in Hong Kong or Macao.
Hong Kong and Macao Compatriot: the Hong Kong and Macao Compatriot traveling to or visiting relatives in mainland may enter into and exit freely by virtue of (Certificate of Returning Hometown )《港澳同胞回乡证》. As for Overseas Chinese, the valid passport or other certificate issued by competent authority of People’s Republic of China shall be available without needing application of visa.
During the staying in Tianjin, it is necessary to take with and take good care of the passport or Certificate of Retuning Hometown, especially check-in in hotel, booking tickets of plane, ship or train. In case of lost, the report of lost and application for the reissuing must be handled immediately at the competent authorities.
The procedures dealing with the lost of passport or certificate of returning Hometown: To report to the local public security office where your passport or certificate of returning hometown is lost and get a certification document; go with such certification documents to the Tianjin Municipal Enter and Exit Administration Office of Public Security Bureau that shall issue the Certification of Passport Lost (as for foreigners who lived permanently or temporarily in Tanggu or whose enterprise located in Tanggu or free trade zone, go to the Public Security Tanggu Branch, those in TEDA, go to the Enter and exit office in TEDA Branch ); apply for the new passport in Chinese embassy or consul in his/her own countries; to apply for visa in Enter and Exit Administration organizations. (Provided that there are separate agreements with the embassy in that country)
Procedure for Compatriots of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan who lost relevant certificate: to report the lost to the local public security office which shall issue a certification of lost; with such certifications, apply to enter and exit administration office of Tianjin Public Security Bureau for public announcement of the lost and revoking declaration in Tianjin Daily; the certificate shall be reissued after verification.

Custom House

Travelers with luggage shall make a declaration faithfully to the customer office when enter or exit the borders and the approvals or certificate issued by competent authorities of State Administration are required for the regulated and controlled goods under Chinese laws and government quarantine rules.
The declaration documents mainly include “luggage declaration”, applied for foreign travelers to China or business or private Chinese travelers. Other declaration documents are Certificate of Returning Hometown for compatriot of Hong Kong and Macao applied for declaration of luggage, Certificate of Pass for Taiwan compatriot declaring the luggage they take with.
Apart from the declaration documents filled by the travelers, the customer office will check their identification card, such as passport, traveler certificate\ certificate of pass and residential certificate, etc.
The travelers are permitted to take with only one of each following goods like portable recorder, mini-camera, portable camera, portable words processor. The golden or silver products shall not exceed the rational limits and shall be declared in the event of more than 50 grams on the purpose of checking and releasing when exit border again.
The gold, silver and their products that purchased within China shall be released by the customer office by virtue of Special Invoice issued by China People’s Bank.
There are no limits for the number of foreign currencies, traveler checks, letter of credit which the traveler take with when enter the border.
The traveler is not allowed to go out of China with more than RMB 6,000 Yuan.
Any cultural relics (including the paintings of former great artists) must be declared to customer office with the verification of Chinese Culture Administration authority when exit the border. For those relics bought in the shops within China, the verification sign and foreign-sales Invoice by the Chinese Culture Administration authority are needed for checking and releasing by the customer office. No relic is allowed to exit the border without necessary verification.
When the traveler wants to take Chinese herbs or Chinese medicine going out of China, the total value must not exceed RMB 300 Yuan and not exceed RMB 150 Yuan going to Hong Kong and Macao regions. The rational amount of Chinese herbs or Chinese medicine bought with foreign exchanges within China will be released by virtue of relevant invoice and foreign exchange vouchers.
Muskiness and other Chinese herbs of medicine exceeding limited values are prohibited to take out of China.

Following goods are not allowed to enter into the border:

All kinds of weapons, mimic weapons, ammunitions and explosives; forged money and false negotiable securities; prints, films, photos, discs, recording tapes, camera tapes, laser discs, computer storage media and other products which is harmful to Chinese politics, economy, culture and morals; all kinds of toxic goods; opium, morphine, heroin, hemp and other addiction and mental drugs ; dangerous germs, pest and other biological hazardous animals, vegetables and products; food, drugs or other products which come from epidemic disease regions or which are pestiferous or harmful to the health of people of livestock.

The following goods are prohibited to go out of China:

Within the range of list of the limited goods entering into border; Any manuscripts, prints, films, photos, discs, movies, recording tapes, camera tapes, laser discs computer storage media and other products which involves in the State secrets; rare relics and out of border prohibited relics; in the very danger of perished and precious animals, vegetables (including specimens) as well as their seeds and reproduction substance.

Residence

There are a lot of hotels, restaurants with simple formalities of check-in accommodating foreigners.
The valid passports or residential certificate is required for foreigners who wants to lodge in hotels, restaurants, hostels, inn, guest house, schools, enterprises, organizations or other establishments and the Temporary Residence Registration Form shall be filled accordingly. The certificate of traveler should be present in case of traveling to non-opening regions. In the events of living in the home of citizens in urban area of Tianjin or in foreign organizations (enterprises, firms or branches), the lodger and host shall go to the local enter and exit administration office of public security making domicile declaration and fill the Temporary Residence Registration Form with the passports and certification documents of the lodger as well as the domicile register of the host within 24 hours after arrival. In rural areas, such formalities shall be settled with 72 hours after the arrival. The application shall be made to the local public security office within 24 hours for temporary living in the mobile vehicles.
The compatriots coming from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan shall be requested to fill the Temporary Residence Registration Form for living in hotel, guest house, school or other organizations. In the events of living in the home of citizens in urban area of Tianjin the lodger and host shall go to the local enter and exit administration office of public security making domicile declaration and fill the Temporary Residence Registration Form with the identification card of the lodger as well as the domicile register of the host within 24 hours after arrival. Procedure for the driving license and cars

The cars owned by foreign funded enterprise, equity joint ventures or cooperative joint ventures, which enjoy no duty-free treatment, may apply for license with black background, that is valid for three years, by virtue of copy of valid business license and invoice of car purchase. It can be renewed for another three years upon expiration, if necessary.
The foreigners and compatriot of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan working in foreign funded enterprise, equity joint ventures or cooperative joint ventures shall apply for Chinese driving license if he/she want to drive car by himself/herself. The documents needed for the application are copy of business license, certificate of the enter into the border, residence or temporary residence and international driving license.

Language

Putonghua is prevailed in most of the People in Tianjin. However, a considerable number of people of native Tianjiner still speaks Tianjin dialect, which characterized by straightness and quick sentence, clear cadence and rhythm as well as many local vocabularies. At present, many people in Tianjin are learning foreign language such as Japanese, Russian, French, Korean and especially English, which speaks most. Names and greeting

There are hundreds of family names headed by Zhang, Wang, Li, Zhao and Liu. Generally, the name is formed by two or three Chinese characters and the family name is in front of the given name. In Chinese, after married, the women will remain the their original family name and given names, so you can call the married women Ms XXX or Miss XXX.

Costumes

The four seasons can be clearly discerned in Tianjin, the coldest weather appears in January, and hottest in July. If you come to Tianjin in Spring or Autumn, the light clothes like knitted sweater, jacket and dust coat are the proper choice. In the hot weather in Summer, wearing the shirt (and jacket) is OK. In winter time, it is very cold and dry in Tianjin, it is recommended to make clothes of cotton, leather or feather ready at hand for wearing outdoors.
The period between spring and summer or between summer and autumn is raining season in Tianjin, to take with light rain coat or umbrella shall be a clever decision.

Currency

Only the identified currency within PRC- RMB can be used in Tianjin.
The unit of RMB is Yuan, Jiao and Fen (cents). The paper notes include 100 Yuan, 50 Yuan, 20 Yuan, 10 Yuan, 5 Yuan, 2Yuan, 1 Yaun, 5 Jiao, 2 Jiao, 1 Jiao, 5 Fen, 2 Fen and 1 Fen; the coins include 1 Yuan, 5 Jiao, 1 Jiao, 5 Fen, 2 Fen and 1 Fen.
Foreigners, overseas Chinese and compatriot from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan may exchange for RMB with foreign bills, or foreign can or bill accounts opened at the China Bank at the agent set in airport, hotel, shops, etc. The exchange vouchers (valid for six months) filled shall be kept in order to exchange back into foreign currency when exit China. Attention: not to try to exchange at street.
Traveling check and credit card are available in Tianjin. At present, all kinds of traveling checks issued by any foreign banks or financial institute (including Taiwan Bank) can be exchanged into cash in Tianjin Branch of China Bank and other bigger banks. Credit card can be used in hotels or designated restaurant and shops.
The deposit of foreign money can also be settled in Tianjin Branch of China Bank. The deposit can be fixed or non-fixed period. There four fixed period deposits for your choice, that is for three months, six months, one year ands two years. The kinds of currencies include US dollar, British pound, Japanese Yen, German Marks, French francs and as for other currencies, it can be deposited after converting into one of the above currencies as per the exchange rate of the depositing day.
Additionally, China Bank may issue foreign exchange and Great Wall Master card to Tianjin permanent offices at overseas and enterprises with foreign investments. Great wall foreign exchange card can be exchanged into cash in more than 2800 master card members Bank in more than 70 countries and regions or can be directly consumed at more than 9.8 million engaged shops.

working time and holidays

There are five working days in Tianjin Municipal government authorities and most of the enterprises. The working time applied in governmental authorities is from 8:30-12:00 am, 1:30 till 6:00 pm. The ships generally open from 9:00 am till 20:00 pm.
The statutory holiday Festival is 7 days for Spring, 7 days National Day, 7days for May 1-International Labor Day and 3 days for beginning of new year.

The post offices, which have bold green doors, windows and signs, are located in every main streets, railway station, airport and scenery spot in Tianjin. The business time for post office begins at 9:00 am and closed at the 6:00 pm, opened every day. The four big post offices in Tianjin Railway Station, Zhongshan Road, North of College of Physical Culture and Sport and Huanghe Road provide day and night services.
The fee for ordinary International letter via air is charged according to the regions and weights of the letter. Post boxes as well as posting agent can be found in every hotel for the convenience of delivery international and domestic letters. The ordinary letter with enough stamps can be delivered through the green mail pillar boxes at anywhere.
